Air filter cleaning for heavy trucks and fleet depots

Fleet workshops pull elements on a schedule. Cleaning them on the bay keeps a serviceable filter in the truck instead of on a shelf waiting to be written off.

Why it matters

The most predictable consumable in the depot

A tractor unit’s primary element loads at a predictable rate: distance, road conditions and season. What is not predictable is what happens when it loads — most workshops replace it early because cleaning it properly is slower than fitting a new one.

That decision looks small on one truck. Multiply it by a fleet and it becomes a monthly line item that nobody planned for.

What changes when the element can be cleaned

  • Serviceable elements stay in service until the media is actually finished, not until the schedule says so
  • The bay is released as soon as the cleaning is done, instead of being held for a manual blowgun pass
  • Every technician produces the same result, because the pressure is set on a regulator and shown on a gauge

Where it fits

The positioning plate covers 100–300 mm bores, which takes in the cylindrical primary and secondary elements used on most tractor units, rigids and bus fleets. Panel-type cabin filters are a different job and are outside the range of this machine.

Which elements fit
Primary outer element (tractor unit)Fits — 100–300 mm bore range
Secondary safety elementFits — at reduced pressure
Cabin / HVAC panel filterNo — panel type, not cylindrical
Workshop compressor intakeDepends — check bore before ordering

On the bay

How the job runs.

The same four steps every time, which is the point — the result should not depend on who is on shift.

Pull the element

Remove the primary element and knock off the loose dust cake outside the bay.

Set the plate

Centre it on the base plate and set the arms to the bore.

Clean at regulated pressure

Start low, raise until dust stops leaving the pleats.

Inspect and refit

Light behind the element. No tears, no thin spots — refit or replace.

Questions

Asked by trucks workshops.

How often can an element be cleaned before it must be replaced?

That is set by the media and the dust, not by the machine. Inspect after every clean: any tear, collapsed pleat or soft spot ends the element’s life regardless of how many cycles it has had.

Will cleaning void the filter manufacturer’s warranty?

Follow the element maker’s service instructions. Many heavy-duty element manufacturers publish cleaning guidance with a pressure limit — the regulator and gauge on this machine are there so you can stay inside it.

Can a driver do it at the roadside?

The unit needs a compressed air line. Where a service truck carries air, yes — that is often faster than bringing the truck in for an element change.
